Troubleshooting cardWatch

Use this grid to help troubleshoot problems you may be experiencing with cardWatch.

If this still doesn't help then feel free to contact us. Make sure you give a clear and detailed description of the problem and also let us know exactly which camera you have and how you have setup cardWatch to read your camera.

Symptom Possible Cause
No thumbnails are visible. cardWatch just shows the icon (shown below) in place of the thumbnail previews.

The most likely reason for this is cardWatch doesn't understand the image file format.

cardWatch uses msdcraw.dll to load thumbnails from supported image files (see the note here for a list of supported formats). msdcraw.dll is neither written or supported by us so we can't really help you if you image files are not supported. However msdcraw.dll is continually being updated and it's possible there is a newer version available. You can check here.

Note: Updating msdcraw.dll is not for the faint of heart. If you're not sure, don't do it.

Tips: -

  • Make sure you backup your existing msdcraw.dll file before attempting to update.
  • Also make sure cardWatch is not running before updating.
  • It may also be a good idea to backup all the INI files in the cardWatch install folder before attempting to run cardWatch with a new msdcraw.dll for the first time.
No Images in the main
window. Not even
the thumbnails shown
above.

There can be a number of reasons for this: -

  • Wrong camera type selected. See settings
  • Wrong drive letter selected. See settings
  • File Types on the camera/memory card are different from those in the camera profile. If you are using a Custom Camera Profile then check the file types are correct. If you are using an existing profile then tell us - we may have made a mistake in the profile. In the meantime, you could create a Custom Camera Profile to get round the issue.
  • Files on the camera/memory card are marked hidden (why that should be is beyond me).

I have my camera (or memory card) plugged in and can see it in Windows but cardWatch doesn't show it. Also, at the top left of the main window where it says should say what camera type I have it just says: -

Camera:

Are you sure you have the correct camera selected in the settings? Cameras configured to be watched by cardWatch are highlighted in the list box. E.G.

Also, make sure you have the correct drive letter selected.

cardWatch sees my camera and the source location but doesn't show any images. I'm using a custom camera profile.

Your problem could be cause by one of the following in the custom camera profile: -

  • Folder is set wrong. Make sure you have the FULL path to the images minus the drive letter and the :
  • File Type is set wrong. You've included the . in the file extension. Remove it and try again.
  • File Type is missing. You've forgotten to add the file type for your camera.

See here for more information on Custom Camera Profiles.

I minimised cardWatch but now it won't come back when I insert my camera/memory card.

cardWatch is programmed to minimise/restore automatically when a camera/memory card is inserted. If you Minimise or restore manually it switches off this feature until the next time cardWatch starts.

To get cardWatch back, right click the cardwatch icon in the system try and select "Transfer Window"

With the preview window, it disappears every time I move the mouse over one of the thumbnails.

cardWatch has to do this or the preview would not be able to update without you having to click the main transfer window each time. Something that would quickly become frustrating.

Best advice we can give is to move the preview window into a position where you can see both it and the main transfer window. If you can't do that due to too low a resolution then you could either make the preview size smaller (see the settings for this) or make the main window smaller. cardWatch will remember the position and sizes of both windows.
