cardWatch Settings
While the settings for cardWatch may seem quite daunting, they are in fact pretty simple.
Instead of showing you the whole settings dialog, we'll go through it piece by piece.
What camera do you have? |
This is a list of cameras cardWatch knows about. If you camera is not in the list then you can add your own one by clicking Add Custom Camera.
If your camera is in the list then simply click it. If you have more than one camera, hold down the control key and click each of yours. Likewise, to deselect a camera, again simply hold the control key and click the one you want to deselect. |
Where should I look for new images? |
This is a list of the removable drives cardWatch knows about. Obviously your camera or memory card reader MUST be plugged in for it to appear here. There are two lists. The one on the left is the drives available to cardWatch while the one on the right is the one(s) you've told cardWatch to monitor. To add a drive for cardWatch to check, either double click it in the left hand list or select it then press the Add button. To remove a drive from the cardWatch monitoring list, either double click the item on the right hand list or select it and press remove. |
System Tray Double Click Action |
When cardWatch is idle it'll minimise to the System Tray (the System Tray is normally at the bottom right of your screen). When minimised it's possible to double click the icon. This setting allows you to configure what will happen when you double click the icon.
Your choices are: -
• Show the settings window.
• Show the main transfer window.
• Quit cardWatch
You can also access any of those option by right clicking the icon. A popup menu will appear with the options. The one that is ticked will be the one you have selected here. |
How should I transfer images? |
cardWatch can copy or move the files from the camera/memory card. This setting allows you to choose your preferred option. |
Where should I transfer the images to? |
cardWatch needs to know where to transfer the images found on your camera/memory card. Generally people have a fixed location where they store their photographs. This represents that location. Press the ... button to browse for the folder. |
Sub Folder Settings |
cardWatch can create a new sub-folder (within the base target folder - see above) each time it performs a transfer.
To enable the creation of a new sub-folder, tick the "Create a new sub folder for each transfer" checkbox.
cardWatch can automatically generate a new sub-folder name based on certain criteria you set. Basically cardWatch allows you to create the sub-folder name based on dynamically changing information. There are three types of information cardWatch can use. They are: -
1) The date/time of the transfer. You can even choose how this is formatted. Represented by %d
2) An incrementing number - increases by one after each transfer. Represented by %i
3) A name you enter prior to performing the transfer. Represented by %u
These dynamic bits of information are represented by Sub Folder Control Codes (See below) and are used individually as well as together to form the basis of the "Sub Folder Creation Mask". The "Explain" button shows detailed help which you can also view here.
In summary, when cardWatch comes to create the sub folder name, it'll go through the "Sub Folder Creation Mask" and replace each of the codes with the relevant information.
|
Sub Folder Control Codes |
The "Sub Folder Creation Mask" above is basically made up of 3 control codes plus any static text you see fit. The control codes are simply one of the three: -
1) Date
2) User Entered Folder Name
3) Incrementing Number
Each of the codes have a "+" button to the right of them. You can press this as a shortcut to typing the code itself into the "Sub Folder Creation Mask" edit box.
(%d) Date Format Options
The options for the date entry are simply on how cardWatch converts the computers date/time (which is actually a very large number) into a date/time format we humans can actually read. Using the options you can choose to eliminate the time, change the formatting of the date (23rd May 2006 or 2006-05-23) or any other format supported by the system.
Date Formatting is possibly the most complicated part of cardWatch however we've put together extensive help on how the formatting works which you can view here.
(%u) User Entered Folder Name Options
There are no options available for this control code. The entry you see is simply the last entry used by cardWatch. It's simply shown for information reasons.
(%i) Incrementing Number Options
The options for the Incrementing Number allow you to change the next value used or change the padding of zeros.
For example, a padding value of 4 and the next number of 5 will replace %i with 0005 while a padding of 3 and a next number of 58 will replace %i with 058 |
Putting the control codes and the mask together. |
As you've learned, each of the three codes represent specific information generated at the time the sub-folder is created. Putting these codes together is very simple. It's just a matter of typing them into the "Sub Folder Creation Mask" edit box.
What's more, is anything that isn't a code is translated exactly as it appears.
For if you had a "Sub Folder Creation Mask" set to: -
Shoot %d - %i
then the "Shoot" and " - " would be left intact. Now assuming you used a date of 2007-03-04 and an incrementing number of 0005 (including padding) this would give a new sub folder name of: -
Shoot 2007-03-04 - 0005
There are a couple of other points to note, firstly you must NOT include any of the following characters in either the "Sub Folder Creation Mask" or the "Date Format Options"
\ / : * ? " < > |
Finally, Windows imposes a limitation of a maximum of 255 characters in a folder or file name. Therefore you should take this into account when setting up your "Sub Folder Creation Mask" and "Date Format Options". |
What should I do once they've been transferred? |
Once a transfer has been completed, cardWatch offers a number of tasks it can do.
These task are run irrespective of whether or not cardWatch copies or moves the files from source to destination.
The options are as follows: -
1) Do Nothing
2) Open the transfer destination in Windows Explorer
3) Open the first file transferred in its default application.
4) Open the last file transferred in its default application.
5)
Run a specific application.
Do Nothing
This does exactly what it says on the tin. Absolutely nothing.
Open the transfer destination in Windows Explorer
This will open a Explorer window to the
Open the first file transferred in its default application.
This will open the first file that was transferred in whatever application is configured to handle the file. It's up to you to maintain your file type associations in Windows;
Open the last file transferred in its default application.
As above except it uses the last file transferred.
Run a specific application.
This allows you to run a single or multiple applications once cardWatch has finished its transfer. Please see below for information on adding, removing and editing application to run on completion of the transfer.
|
Application(s) To Run |

To add an application to run on completion, press the "Add" button.
To edit an existing application, select it then press the "Edit" button. Or you can simply double - click the application in the list.
To delete an application from the list, select it then press the delete button.
Settings for adding/editing an application can be found here.
|
Preview Settings |

This lets you set the height and width of the preview images. Please note, changes to these values won't take affect until AFTER cardWatch has re-read the images from your camera/memory card.
